The COMT Gene Mutation (And Why You Should Care)
During their 30s, most people accept significant changes to their body.
Energy, sleep, and brain fog are some. If you take care of yourself, these are rarely an issue when you are young.
But what if I told you that there is a gene mutation that causes these symptoms in 25-30% of the population and that there is an easy fix.
What is the COMT Gene?
It down-regulates certain neurotransmitters.
The fight-or-flight adrenaline and dopamine reaction.
If you have this gene, you have a very high likelihood of:
OCD
Fatigue
Anxiety
Sleep issues
Overthinking
Sensitive to sounds and texture
This creates overstimulation, and when your environment quiets, your mind stays active and can't calm down.
You have a hard time dismantling thoughts, also called the monkey mind.
It also plays a role in estrogen production. If you have this gene, you are estrogen-dominant.
High Estrogen Symptoms:
More emotional
Easy to store fat
Often depressed
Hard to gain muscle mass
How Can You Overcome This Mutation?
You can take compounds to support your body's ability to down-regulate the neurotransmitters.
Furthermore, you have to cut certain foods that cause a slowdown of the fight-flight transmitters' breakdown.
Here is a list of things you can do:
Eliminate quercetin from your diet (red onions, blueberries, green tea)
Supplement daily with:
B12 (in Hydroxocobalamin form)
Folate (in l-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium form)
L-Theanine, Magnesium & Melatonin at night
Optional supplements that help with neurotransmitter breakdown:
TMG (Trimethylglycine)
SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine)
It is essential to use the correct compound forms.
You can do genetic tests to be sure you have this mutation, or you can take the supplements and watch if your symptoms improve.
Discovering that I have this mutation and taking the above steps improved my quality of life.
I hope it will do the same for you.
